In the show Fiddler on the Roof , Hodel and Chava dream that the town matchmaker will find them husbands and then they will live happily ever after. In boxing, matchmakers utilize similar talents as the ones in the play, but with decidedly different results. Just how does one become a matchmaker? All matchmakers interviewed for this article agreed on one prerequisite for the job — a love of boxing. From there he met various people in the industry and one thing led to another. Moretti was given increased responsibility and allowed to make matches for the four and six rounders. Matchmaking is not simply creating dream match-ups. Making matches also requires the ability to negotiate contracts, and most of all, having reliable industry sources. But they also rely heavily on others to give them honest appraisals of how a particular boxer looks in the ring or gym. It has to be competitive.

Amateur boxing

Reggie Strickland, a middleweight from Indianapolis, fights once a month, often more. Though he is not without talent, Strickland has made his mark as a perennial loser during 17 years of professional fighting; he has lost of fights, some under his name and some under pseudonyms like Reggie Buse and Reggie Raglin. Verdell Smith, a welterweight from Bartlesville, has also established himself as a journeyman capable of providing an up-and-coming boxer with a challenging match that does not usually carry with it the risk of defeat.

Smith, whose record is , has also fought under a variety of names. Eight times, he has faced welterweight Buck Smith, no relation. Verdell Smith lost all eight matches: twice under his own name, twice as Tommy Bowles and four times as Tim Brooks, according to state regulators and databases of boxers’ records.

Anyone familiar with me knows that I make odds on just about everything, and one of those things is boxing, including a lot of the lesser-profile.

Loyer is in professional boxing matchmaker. But it’s still very limited in time and very local. For my part, I am independent. I am not related to any club, or any firm. I contact the promoters, boxers, coaches and I offer my services. On promoters, they are sharing their needs and they submit proposals. I can work for weeks without success. But as in all things, the secret is to persevere. As I explain to promoters, they have nothing to lose by working with me.

After all a big part of this job is to make sure the fans see an entertaining fight and they get value for money. So on paper at least it seems like a very easy job but I believe it is the toughest job in boxing apart from been a fighter because they have to made the right matches at the right time, and although they try and keep the fans happy it is important to remember that he works for the promoters and fighters not the fans.

So really been a matchmaker is a fine line between making matches that the fans want to see and making fights that will make money for the promoters and the fighters.
